Chapter Seven
Sweet woke up in a cold sweat, blanket plastered to his bare skin. Sunlight from his windows nearly blinded him. Noonday sun. Cursing under his breath, Sweet raised a hand to his eyes. Fuck. Who opened the blinds? Phoenix maybe. Remembering he wasn’t the sole occupant of the bed, Sweet reached for Phoenix but found empty air instead.
“What the fuck?” Sweet rubbed his eyes, looking around. He didn’t hear the water running, confirming Phoenix wasn’t showering. Would Phoenix be brave enough to wander out his room into hostile territory, knowing some of the Hellhounds were suspicious of him?
Warm air caressed his face. Sweet’s head snapped to the opened window. Realization dawning on him, Sweet ripped the sheets away from his body, practically stumbled over his two feet reaching the window. He sniffed, and his wolf confirmed Phoenix’s scent was strongest here. Frowning, Sweet examined the ledge and thumbed the blackened spots on the wood, probably from Phoenix’s fire.
Questions raced through his head. Why the fuck would Phoenix run? They had a breakthrough last night, didn’t they? Had Sweet imagined it all? Fuck it, he should have tied his damn flighty firestarter to his bed if he knew something like this would happen. Sweet shrugged on his jeans, about to climb out the window, then realized he could damn well walk out. Plus, Sweet couldn’t do this on his own. He needed Reaper.
Storming out, Sweet banged on Reaper’s room next door.
“Go the fuck away.”
Impatient, Sweet braced his shoulder against the door. Breathing hard, he unleashed his supernatural strength. The wood gave easily. Reaper jumped out of bed, readying himself into a fighting stance, then seeing Sweet, he cursed. Sweet spied two bodies in bed and recognized two of the club rent boys, Owen and Russ, Reaper’s favorites.
The two young men rolled in Reaper’s bed. Seeing him, one, Sweet didn’t know which, flashed him a suggestive smile. As if Sweet would want to fuck his brother’s used goods. Besides, those days were over, judging by how he reacted to Phoenix’s absence.
“Get the fuck out,” Sweet said, meaning it. A growl sent them scrambling out.
Decidedly awake, Reaper studied him for a second. “You better have a good reason or brother or not, I’m going to rip you a new hole.”
Sweet smirked and then remembered why he was there. He closed the door behind him and took a deep breath, unable to remember the last time he asked Reaper for a serious favor. Sweet didn’t like owing anyone debts, even Reaper, but he couldn’t trust anyone else. Mace would go nuts if he found out Sweet’s stolen captive, their one emergency hostage and bargaining chip, gone.
“He’s gone.”
“Good.”
Sweet snarled. “No, you don’t understand.”
Reaper shook his head. “If he wanted to stay, he would, but Phoenix fucking ran from you. Can’t you get that in your dumb brain?”
Sweet curbed his urge to choke his brother. He bared his teeth, letting Reaper see his wolf felt the same surging protectiveness emotions Sweet did. The inbuilt need to protect what was theirs.
